Véronique Vienne on art directors

“When friends call to ask my advice on how to negotiate a salary for an art director’s position, my first question is always ‘What’s your budget?’

The money you spend, not the money you make, is a measure of your authority.

Sure, great editorial art directors can come up with wonderful art on almost no money. But it is to the detriment of the artists they hire. And don’t get me going on that topic. I am appalled by the way illustrators, for instance, are compensated for their work for magazines. As far as I am concerned, exploiting starving artists should not be part of the art director’s job description.”
