“Yet the secret to good film posters was very simple: there was little or no intervention by the client. The film’s title and the most prominent names associated with it were usually the only requirements. Hillmann was able to view films in advance screenings and then had several weeks for the design work. When selecting the design to be realized, discussions with the client focused more on questions of content concerning the film rather than on the stylistics of the graphics. ‘There were no restrictions on the motifs, unlike with traditional film posters, where the distributor’s boss said, ‘I’d rather have that in red’ or something. It was just always the question of how much it was allowed to cost. And that explains, for example, especially for the beginning of the activity, why so many motifs were in black and white.'”
